Elmira Southside Beat Corning West 59-45 Improve record to 3-1


Ten players broke into the scoring column for Southside, led by Mike Backer's 18 points, as the Green Hornets beat Corning West 59-45 on Wednesday in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference boys basketball game.

Southside (3-1, 1-0 STAC) led only by two points at halftime, but the Green Hornets scored 24 third-quarter points and extended their advantage to 19.
"We just started getting out and running a little bit better," Southside coach John Fesetch said. "We filled the lanes better and got spacing as we were running and were able to get some easy baskets through our transition offense."
Anderson Brooks added 11 points for Southside, which led 10-6 after the first quarter and 23-21 at halftime. Isaac Yorro contributed nine points.
Ross Sidebottom scored 17 points for West (2-2, 0-2). Nick Dobson added 15 points.
* EFA 68, Corning East 55: Reggie Corley scored 24 points and Jorell Cook added 19 points, and each grabbed 14 rebounds, to lead Elmira Free Academy over Corning East in a STAC West game.
* Mansfield 63, Troy 58: Tim Berguson scored 19 points and grabbed 19 rebounds and Luke Berguson added 18 points to lead Mansfield over Troy in a nonleague game.
* North Penn 67, Northeast Bradford 63 (OT): North Penn outscored Northeast Bradford 11-7 in overtime to take a nonleague game.
The Panthers' Mike Dawson had eight of his 13 points in the team's 26-point fourth quarter.
Also for North Penn, Anthony Diaspara had 14 points and Brian Yaggie added 12, including the tying free throw with no time left on the clock in regulation.
